二枚貝の殻や円石藻という植物プランクトンの殻などは、カルサイト(方解石)と呼ばれる炭酸カルシウム結晶からできており、一方、この翼足類の殻やサンゴの骨格はアラゴナイト(あられ石)という炭酸カルシウム結晶からできています。
で、アラゴナイトの方が溶けやすいというか、先に海水中の飽和度が下がるのです。
したがって、目に見える影響が出始めるのは二枚貝よりもアラゴナイト殻生物です。低緯度地方では水温の影響もあり飽和度は十分高く、そのへんに棲むサンゴは特に影響を受けていないようですが、高緯度地方に棲む翼足類には影響が出始めているようだ、というのがこの調査かと思います。
厳密には酸性化による炭酸イオン濃度の低下のほか、気温上昇(温暖化)によって海氷が溶け、海水が薄まる影響もあると考えられています。海氷が溶けると大気と海の接触面積が増えてよりCO2が溶け込み、さらに酸性化するとか、とにかく色々な要因はあるけど高緯度地方の海の炭酸カルシウム飽和度が下がってきていて心配だね、という話です。
